How to Stream From Computer to TV with younity

younity has a whole lot of features that improve your digital life, but we’re big movie fans in the office so streaming movies to the TV is one of our favorites. If you have movies, TV shows, or even GoPro videos and home videos stored on your computer, it’s not always convenient to lug your computer to the same room as your TV to cast a movie to your big screen. Or if your content is stored on a desktop, it just ain’t happening.

younity makes it super easy to stream any of your movies and videos stored on your computer to your TV using your phone or tablet. If you have iOS devices, you’ll need an Apple TV, and if you have Android devices you’ll need a casting device (such as Chromecast), or if you have a Samsung phone and TV you can also use Samsung mirroring. And FYI, additional casting options are in the works!

Once you have younity set up, you have several options to stream from computer to TV listed below. And if you need some direction to complete your younity set up, visit our quick set up guide and you’ll be up and running in no time. Happy streaming!

Stream From Computer to TV with Android:

Option 1: Screen Cast (Android devices with Android 5.1 OS) to a Chromecast device

On Android devices with their OS updated to Android 5.1, Screen Cast is available in the Notification Shade options. This is baked into Android 5.1 and gives you the ability to cast whatever is on your screen to a Smart TV or a Chromecast device. During testing, I saw the best casting quality through this route compared to the following options.

Step 1: Pulling down your Notification Shade, select “Screen Cast”

Step 2: Select your Chromecast device

Step 3: Open younity and pick a video to start casting

Option 2: Google Cast to a Chromecast Device

If Screen Cast is not an option because you have a Samsung phone, you can download the Google Cast app to stream to a Chromecast device.

Step 1: From the home screen in Google Cast, select :”Cast screen/audio”

Step 2: Once your Chromecast has been found, select it

Step 3: Hit the yellow button to start casting

Step 4: Open younity and select a video to start casting

Option 3: Samsung Mirroring to a Samsung TV or a Roku device

Samsung has it’s own casting function, but it’s a little more limited than the Android Cast Screen option. With Samsung Mirroring, your options for casting is to a Samsung TV or a Roku device.

Step 1: Open younity and pick a video you want to stream

Step 2: Tap the triple dot icon to the right of the video and select “Open In” and younity will prep the video for exporting*

Step 3: Select “Video Player”

Step 4: Select “More” at the top right corner.

Step 5: Select “Share”

Step 6: From here, you can choose your Samsung TV or your Roku device to start casting

Tip: keep your phone close to the TV for the best casting connection.

*The time will vary depending on the size of the video, processing speed of your computer, and your network speed. I recommend hitting the “Download” option first, if you have storage available on your phone, giving you the option of leaving the app and coming back later once the download is complete.

Option 4: Third Party Apps to stream to a Roku, Chromecast, or Fire TV/Fire Stick, Smart TV, or Apple TV.

If Screen Cast isn’t an option because you’re on an older phone model that can’t upgrade to Android 5.1, not to worry! You still have the option of downloading a third party app to facilitate the casting from your phone to your Smart TV/Apple TV/Chromecast/Roku/Fire Stick/Fire TV. The list of screen casting apps is almost endless, but for the sake of this walkthrough, I will use AllCast:

Step 1: Open younity and pick a video you want to stream

Step 2: Tap the triple dot icon to the right of the video and select “Open In” and younity will prep the video for exporting*

Step 3: Select AllCast (or whatever streaming app you prefer)

Step 4: Select your media player and start streaming!

*The time will vary depending on the size of the video, processing speed of your computer, and your network speed. I recommend hitting the “Download” option first, if you have storage available on your phone, giving you the option of leaving the app and coming back later once the download is complete.
